ON THE PLUS SIDE

Lumos Ultra strengths

  • The lighting system is integrated rather than clipped on, so it is less likely to be forgotten or knocked off.
  • The included Remote Lite controls the rear turn signals from the handlebar.
  • A MIPS version is available, with head-size-specific weight changes clearly published.
  • The helmet is certified to CPSC 16 CFR 1203 and EN 1078 in the supplied configuration.
  • IPX6 weather resistance, USB-C charging, and 4–10 hours of battery life support regular commuting.

Lumos Ultra compromises

  • It is a bicycle helmet and must not be treated as motorcycle protection.
  • Automatic brake lights require the separate Lumos Remote rather than the included Remote Lite.
  • The lights add charging and battery management to an ordinary helmet routine.
  • S and XL sizes are MIPS-only; the standard version is limited to M-L.
  • A light cannot compensate for poor positioning or a driver who is not looking.

What the Lumos Ultra solves

Most commuters already need a helmet and a light. The Ultra consolidates the rear light, front visibility, and turn signals into the helmet. That reduces the chance of leaving the rear light at home and puts the signal where drivers expect a cyclist's upper body to be.

The included Remote Lite adds handlebar control. It is a useful supplement to hand signals, especially when a rider wants to keep both hands on the bars, but it does not guarantee that a driver has noticed.

Lumos Ultra safety is certification first

The Ultra is a certified bicycle helmet, not a novelty light-up shell. That distinction matters. Buy the correct size and MIPS configuration for your activity, and replace the helmet after a significant impact.

MIPS is designed to address rotational forces in certain angled impacts. It is useful additional technology, not a guarantee. Fit, shell coverage, impact location, and the severity of the crash remain decisive.

Fit and weight need real measurements

Measure the widest part of the head, just above the eyebrows and ears. The M-L shell covers 54–61 cm, while S and XL cover narrower or larger ranges. A dial fit system can fine-tune a correct shell, but it cannot make an undersized helmet safe.

The standard M-L helmet is listed at 370 g. MIPS versions range from 370 g to 450 g by size. That remains reasonable for a commuter helmet, but riders who are sensitive to weight should compare it with a lighter non-smart helmet.

Battery discipline and ownership

A smart helmet adds another device to charge. Run time is 4–10 hours depending on the mode, so high-visibility flashing use needs a routine. USB-C simplifies cable management, but a stored helmet should not be forgotten with a depleted battery.

The IPX6 rating handles rainy riding better than many helmet electronics, yet charging should wait until the connector is dry. Review the crash-replacement programme and warranty terms before purchase.

RIDER VERDICT

Verdict: excellent urban visibility, correct use required

The Lumos Ultra is a credible choice for bicycle commuters who want integrated visibility and are willing to manage charging. It is not a substitute for a motorcycle helmet and should not be marketed as one. Choose the MIPS version and exact size from measured fit, then treat the lights as an additional signal rather than protection.
